Swarming Out The Gate

A lot of people have been asking me how Swarm is doing.  They see that it's moved up the charts pretty fast in the one day or so it's been out.  Believe me, my head is spinning keeping up with it all!

In short, the original geoDefense was a pretty big hit in my opinion.  Not a Flight Control or anything, but still it got a lot of attention in a market that's really overcrowded.  And I was proud of that.  Swarm, I hoped, would do better.

It's too early to say anything definitive, but I thought many of you'd like to see how Swarm is doing compared to the original thus far.

And so...

Shameless Plug Time!*

I believe success on the App Store is not about luck.  If you are a developer and want to know how you can do this too, I'm revealing my approach, my secrets and my madness at the 360IDEV conference at the end of the month.  Come to my talk and find out how you can do this too!

* Ok, not really much of a shamless plug. I'm doing this on my own dime, and just want to give back to the iPhone developer community.  Plus I want to support the fine folks at 360DEV.

360idev Video/Audio

Hi David,

Congrats on the success of GDS.  It's pretty incredible how fast it shot to the top!

For those of us that can't make it to your talk, will there be any audio, video or transcripts available?

Or will you make any of that info available on your website?

Thanks!

Sharing your Talk

I second Ken's comment.

Will there be some type of sharing of knowledge that will be available other than having to attend the conference?

It would be wonderful to have access to something like that for those of us who may not be able to attend.

Thank you for what you do share...

Cheers

360iDev Talk

Actually I don't know if 360iDev does any type of video taping or anything.  Although I may put some of my stuff up on the web after, it's the presentation itself that's really key.  I'm not a power-points of bullet points sorta guy.  More of a jump up and down and evangalize my point kinda guy.  Which I do best in person. :)

Statistics reporting and advertising

David,

I noticed you seem to have just a ton of data as it relates to App Store ranking and sales. How do you get ranking data so quickly? Also, do you have affinity for a particular ad network or do you rely on social for most of your advertising?

Thanks and great job on the app!
Jeremy

Ranking Data

There are many tools for getting rankings, such as http://appFigures.com

I don't do ads in my games, so can't be of help there.

It will be interesting to see

It will be interesting to see how much that spike drops off over the next few days.  While I expect Swarm to be a long term success (I'm sure the ~$20k it just pulled in already qualifies it as that...), I wonder how much of that huge spike was due to the long delay in approval causing a buildup of hype.  Everyone who was waiting and waiting bought it immediately, so we'll see if that spike drops now that those sales are all accounted for.

It does seem that having such a huge spike at once will ultimately work out to your advantage though, since that catapulted the game immediately into the top 5 on the sales list, which as we all know is the best advertising that you can get.  Perhaps it won't drop off at all, because people who hadn't heard of the game will now see it in the top 5 and buy it.
