Agree. If you've played the first game you kinda know the ropes already, but the thumpers are new, and they just showed up without so much as a comment.
The rockets fired from the tower and the guns are very, very different in functionality speed, reload time, power and precision after every upgrade stage.
Well, to be honest...those of us who played the origina geodefense had to mostly learn by trial and error. However, the developer DID put instructions in the first few levels to describe how the towers work.
You should download geodefense lite to learn about the general strategies of the game.
But at least a crude manual helping the laymen (and by that propulsing sales by the way - thats the reason the game is here in first place) would not hurt anyone - would it? Regarding proving instructions. Thats a standard since mankind walked the earth first time, starting with the instruction given to Adam & Eve and the snake by GOD and - to the damned Apple... (the Apple iPhone was not in the theater by then - otherwise he would have used the Jesus phone:-) Bottom line:A simple "help" button with crude instructions would do - no stone tablets needed
I kind of had the same "Dubya tee ef, mate?" reaction to the thumper tower . . . no little pop up to tell me a bit about it.
I still can't decide if I like it or not -- it would've been nice to have a little bit of an explanation. At the same time, you're more likely to learn how the tower best suits your style of play by figuring it all out as you go.
In the meantime . . . here's what David had to say on GDS tower changes and additions in the IGN interview:
"The Thump Tower, which emits shockwaves of damage against anything that strays too close. The Vortex Towers (the black holes) are a little different this time in that you don't ever buy them... they are pre-positioned on some maps for you."
I would imagine that upgrading the thumps increases their damage, rate of fire, and splash area; however, I havent spent much time using them in game yet. Also, keep in mind that upgrading to level seven on almost any tower in the game is not always the best thing to do depending on what you're trying to accomplish with the tower. The level seven jump often creates a drastic change in firing rate and/or range compared to its level six counterpart, and can sometimes hinder your efforts.
Lastly . . . here are some grabs from geoDefense to give you an idea of tower basics. I do HIGHLY recommend the previous suggestion of downloading geoDefense Lite (or why not just buy the real thing -- especially with the update coming out soon) to practice the tower mechanics.
Thump towers need an explanation ... I don't see any use for them right now. At low levels <5 they are horrible - almost no damage done to the creeps. The area of effect they highlight is pretty large but when you watch a creep take damage from the tower it's almost as if the only damage it does is to the creep on the hex right beside the tower. Creeps not on adjacent hexes don't appear to take any damage.
Also I agree with all the comments above on a explination. I played the first game so I had a good idea how everything worked. However my girl never played the first but I got her started on swarm and she was at a loss on how things worked ... maybe that's by design but it frustrated her enough to put the game down saying "...where is the help screen." I agree with a less is more philosophy in general but most games at least have a little help section/overlay with a brief explination of what to do.

...one cannot find out by sheer trial and error.
Just one small example:
The rockets fired from the tower and the guns are very, very different in functionality speed, reload time, power and precision after every upgrade stage.
Making a huge difference
