With the imminent release of Swarm I figured I should make more of an effort to at least reach the HARD levels on GD so I've been playing every night in bed till about 2am to get those medium levels out the way.
Finally got started on The Eye yesterday and had a few more goes of it tonight and finally beat it!!! Damn that is so close, the last creep was just about to hit HOME as he died!!!
Think I would struggle to replicate completing it again with it being so finely tuned as I presume I just managed to get enough turrets in the right places and upgraded in time/sequence to do it!
Now onto the next one!!! Definitely the big difference with GD is the high paced gameplay compared to all the other TD games I have on my iPhone.
You think its hard beating The Eye? You should have seen what it took to balance that level to the razor thin margin that it has. The idea was that you had to be perfect to win it (or find some way I didn't think of). Actually, it's the "find some way I didn't think of" part that's the real problem.
When working on Swarm, I really leaned on my friend Skippy to help me build levels. We have worked together for years, so I knew we were on the same wave-length as far as this sort of design work. But the funny thing was how one of us or the other would build a level and hone it to a razor fine balance and then give to the other to test and they'd beat it instantly with no problem. Why? Just because they'd use an approach that was different.
In fact, in Swarm... this problem is a lot worse than it is in GD. The reason is that GD uses fixed paths... so one had to test lots of ways people could put towers around the paths. It's a lot of variables to test for! But nothing compared to the open-field style of Swarm! You can approach the same level is a lot of different ways. Even the more constrained of the levels still have vastly more variables than any of the geoDefense ones with its fixed paths.
Having two sets of eyes on the balance issue should make those medium and hard levels quite challenging and fun to beat. The worst thing you can do is totally blow it and make the game too easy... then there's no challenge and no fun. And it's easy to miss something.
I think I'll turn my thoughts on this into a blog post...
Of course the idea behind The Eye was exactly that... the thin line between victory and defeat. It took forever to refine the balance to that precise point. Even still some people didn't find it that hard... which is true of every level... some people get stuck on levels that others have no difficulty with and vice versa.
You will be glad to know that The Eye makes a return in geoDefense Swarm with the level: The Revenge of The Eye
I loved The Eye because it was so simple and fast, yet quite difficult. I guess I made it in just a couple of tries by pure luck.
Angular view was the only level I had to cheat (google the solution) to pass. It nearly drove me insane that I couldn't pass it, and now when I know how to do it, it is sursprisingly unchallenging...
It's a little weird that a level can be darn near impossible with 99 different solutions, and with the 100th you pass it without even risking any of your 10 lives.
I'm really looking forward to the online scoreboards - I'm never in the top ranks, but I love using the ridiculously high scores I see as motivation. :)
I had a really hard time with X factor. I don't know what the problem was but I couldn't beat it for a long time. Eventually I got the right balance of blaster towers and shock towers to pay for an army of missle towers. :D
What about Twister? That level is completely impossible. Anybody have any pointers? I NEED THEM! I have employed every strategy I could ever think of, to no avail. Help.
I think for me the hardest level so far is Nucleotide, I dont know what it is about this level that I just cant beat. With the exception of abou 3 hard levels one 2 in meidum I just havent had the chance to try, Nucleotide is totally kicking my ass...i think i've spent about 4 hrs trying this level alone...but I refuse to give up and search for a solution. ....
I agree, but that is one of the things I love about it. One level where you have to be "perfect" to pass it!

Thanks for the forums as well! :)

What's a good score on The Eye? I only got 9,085.
I was able to get 17,460.

My top on The Eye was 16,785 . . . I don't the I have to patience to try to go back and do any better . . . haha.
I have the same points 16,785 :-)

I was enjoying the game until The Eye.
After six hours spend for nothing, I figured out the solution on the net like a coward.
No fun. I really hate this level for ever.
